An Office With A Garden.
A BREEAM Excellent Office Rooftop in Oslo.
A break at work in central Oslo that takes you to the countryside. This rooftop was designed for employees to sit during pauses and gatherings among the plants of the Oslo fjord. Half the space is green. The challenge was to seat as many people as possible without losing that half. Wavy planting beds with built-in benches made it possible.
All plant species are native to Oslo fjord, carefully chosen by designers with the help of an expert botanist. The goal was to boost biodiversity and made a beautiful space that represented the local flora.
The green space was planned as a place for employees to gather, where they can daily have lunch or take a pause and return to work more productive. But they also serve many other purposes:
reduce rainwater sent to the sewers
insulate the building and cut energy use
clean the air in the surrounding urban area
Designed from the early phases in full coordination with an interdisciplinary team of engineers, scientists and designers, this rooftop was a key element in helping the building achieve BREEAM Excellent certification and is today a landmark that sets the office apart from its neighbours.
This project was designed at SLA, where I led a team of talented landscape architects as project manager.
